HQT
As the beginning of the new year rapidly approaches, I was wondering how many schools are fully staffed - AND - how many of those teachers are considered highly qualified by No Child Left Behind standards? There are three middle schools in my district with a fourth planned to open in 2008-2008. We currently have about 10 positions that vacant. One of those schools is a Title One school, so if we do not fill the open positions with HQT, we will be sending a letter home to parents alerting them to that fact. How many of your states have requirements for sate certification that do not match up with NCLB requirements for HQT? Arizona certainly fits that bill. It makes it difficult to hire teachers from other states, etc.
I truly believe that the "middle school way" is the BEST way to service adolescents. In order to preserve this philosophy, we need to be vigilant as we talk to our legislators to help recitify this situation. Has anyone had any luck in this arena?
